Energy Management & Services Co. (EMS) was formed in 1989 by Dale Honn in Versailles, Kentucky. Soon after, Mary Smith joined the company to assist Dale with growing the business. Initially, EMS provided operational expertise and equipment to local natural gas producers. As a registered land surveyor in the State of Kentucky and a registered Professional Engineer in many states, Dale was able to expand EMS capabilities and obtain work through survey and small engineering projects and studies.

During the early 1990s the company expanded its client base and began execution of projects for local gas producers and transmission pipeline companies. At this time, EMS brought in its third employee, Duane Haines as Project Manager. Duane assisted Dale and Mary with the continued growth of EMS during the early 1990s, ultimately becoming Sr. Vice President.

The first major design project, a transmission pipeline in Tennessee, was awarded to EMS in 1994. The addition of key staff members throughout the 1990s allowed the company to expand its range of services and number of clients served. 


Simultaneously, EMS was able to expand capabilities through execution of new products in the areas of major transmission pipelines, distribution systems, gathering systems, gas storage facilities, and gas compression.

Since its inception in 1989, EMS has evolved into a major full service project management and engineering design firm. EMS has successfully grown its staff, services, and geographic presence.

EMS has established offices near key client locations, thereby providing our clients with local, personal interaction with project, and company management.

In addition to our headquarters in Versailles, Kentucky, EMS has established offices in Houston and Baytown, Texas; Charleston, West Virginia; and Detroit, Michigan. EMS continuously seeks additional office locations throughout the United States to better serve our expanding client base. EMS also establishes project offices, as required, to better serve our clients.

EMS has grown to include key affiliated businesses. These affiliates include:

  • EMS Quality Control, LLC (EMSQC) – formed in 2006 and based in Versailles, Kentucky with a branch office in Baytown, Texas. EMSQC provides construction inspection, construction supervision, and related field services to our clients.



  • EMS Land & Environmental Services, LLC (EMSLES) – formed in 2007 and based in Detroit, Michigan. EMSLES provides a complete range of land, right-of-way, and environmental management services throughout the United States.
